The Charlestown Navy Yard, on Boston's Freedom Trail, draws more than 1.5 million visitors a year and is a key operations base for National Parks of Boston staff. With Great American Outdoors Act funding, the park is rehabilitating Building 107, a former public works building, and its surroundings.

Why

  • Stop the decay: Building 107 is deteriorating, with other deferred maintenance that would keep growing — and it has been an eyesore for the neighborhood.
  • Save money: moving staff into one building fulfills a key part of the park's Master Development Strategy — cutting operating costs, streamlining maintenance, operations and security, and freeing other buildings to lease.
  • Better workspace: a flexible, collaborative space built for staff needs, improving coordination across departments, partnerships and the visitor experience.
  • History and function: restoring elements of the historic building while adding the sustainability and accessibility a modern facility needs.

Progress

  • July 17, 2024: groundbreaking, attended by Acting Deputy Secretary of the Interior Laura Daniel-Davis, Superintendent Michael Creasey, city and state officials, and Navy Yard partners.
  • Now: park staff are working with contractors on final designs.
