Is your child much shorter — or much taller — than other children the same age? That is often normal. Some children are small for their age yet developing normally, and many are short or tall simply because their parents are.
What a growth disorder is
Some children do have growth disorders: problems that keep them from reaching normal height, weight, sexual maturity or other features. Very slow or very fast growth can signal a gland problem or a disease.
The role of growth hormone
The pituitary gland makes growth hormone, which drives the growth of bone and other tissues.
| Problem | What happens | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Too little growth hormone | a child may be very short | growth hormone treatment can stimulate growth |
| Too much growth hormone, usually from a pituitary tumor that is not cancer | in children, gigantism: bones and body grow too much. In adults, acromegaly: hands, feet and face grow larger than normal | surgery to remove the tumor, medicines or radiation therapy |
