Pheasant Hunting

Tule Lake and Lower Klamath Refuges participate in the California and Oregon General Pheasant Seasons each year. We are not open for the archery-only hunts regulated in California.

Pheasant hunting on Tule Lake and Lower Klamath Refuges can be good, habitat ranges from agricultural stubble fields, ditch banks and upland fields with high vegetation. New hunt areas were designated in 2019, see the Refuge hunt maps for specific units. During years when water deliveries are plentiful pheasant units may be flooded but still provide good hunting opportunities. Hip boots or waders are recommended for hunting these areas.

Pheasant hunting is permitted 7 days per week during the State's general season; no check-in or reservations are required. Shooting times are 8 a.m. through the state regulated ending shoot time; check your State regulation booklets as these times may be different for California and Oregon hunt areas. Blaze orange and non-toxic ammunition are required on both refuges and the use of a trained hunting dog is strongly recommended. Hunters are not allowed to enter fields prior to opening day or prior to shoot time each hunt day.

An Annual Recreation pass is required to hunt the Tule Lake and Lower Klamath Refuges. All State and Federal laws and regulations apply; all required licenses, stamps, validations and permits must be in the hunters possession while hunting. Blaze Orange Requirements: Blaze orange is to be worn at all times while hunting pheasants with in the Klamath Basin Refuge Complex. An outer garment must be worn above the waist and consist of at least 50% blaze orange which must be visible from both front and back. Outer garments may consist of a hat, cap, vest, jacket, shirt or coat.
