The numbers
In 2021, 3.7% of U.S. adults aged 18 and older had serious psychological distress in the past 30 days — more women (4.6%) than men (2.7%).

- Women had higher rates in every age group, and their rates fell with age.
- Men aged 18–44 and 45–64 had higher rates than men 65 and older.

How distress was measured
Adults were asked how often, in the past 30 days, they felt:
- so sad that nothing could cheer them up;
- nervous;
- restless or fidgety;
- hopeless;
- that everything was an effort;
- worthless.
Answers from "none of the time" to "all of the time" scored 0–4 points each, for a total of 0–24. A score of 13 or more counted as serious psychological distress. Only people who answered all six questions were included.
