NASA's Space to Ground is your weekly update on what's happening aboard the International Space Station.

What is said in the film

Welcome to Space to Ground, your weekly update on what's happening aboard the International Space Station. I'm Raegan Scharfetter. The work continues this week in preparation for the launch of Axiom Mission 4 to the space station from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The launch will mark the fourth private astronaut mission to the orbiting laboratory and it's bringing more than just passengers. In a first-of-its-kind partnership, NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation, or ISRO, has teamed up to send scientific investigations alongside Axiom Mission 4 commander Peggy Whitson, pilot Shubhanshu Shukla, mission specialist Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski, and mission specialist Tibor Kapu.

These studies will focus on everything from cell biology to material science with real world impacts here on Earth. One standout experiment is the Myiogenesis-ISRO study. This research will use muscle stem cell cultures to examine the muscle repair process and test chemicals known to support mitochondrial function. Results could lead to interventions that maintain muscle health during long duration space missions, help people on Earth with age related muscle loss, and muscle wasting diseases and assist athletes and people recovering from surgery. Speaking of athletes, NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers recently shared on X how daily exercise is key to staying strong in space.

On Earth, gravity does the work. But in orbit, it takes specialized workouts and custom equipment to maintain bone and muscle health. She said in part . "While I'm not a huge fan of running on Earth, I have come to enjoy running in space. Did you know we exercise every day up here?

We actually call it countermeasure because without the force of gravity, your bones, muscles, and other systems start to atrophy. It amazes me how quickly the body adapts to its environment! However, maintaining bone and muscle strength along with cardiovascular health is key to a quick recovery when we get back on the planet. Running is just one of the ways we keep the cardiovascular system in good health. " Science and space continues to push boundaries helping us gain better understanding of long duration space flight for future missions to the moon Mars and beyond.
