Swimming On Your Back is a teaching package from the National Park Service on the natural history and ecology of sea otters in Alaska, for classrooms and families.

What is in it

  • A children's book, in print and online, with lively illustrations and scientifically accurate content.
  • A song, "Swimming On Your Back," to sing along with using the lyrics in the book.
  • Thirteen coloring sheets drawn from the book's illustrations.
  • Background on sea otters from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

The song

Jim Pfeiffenberger of the Ocean Alaska Science and Learning Center wrote and recorded it.

"Swimming On Your Back," by Jim Pfeiffenberger. NPS.

Its chorus:

Oh sea otter, swimming on your back
Oh sea otter, you really know how to relax
The water's cold along the coast, but your fur coat keeps you warm as toast
Oh sea otter, swimming on your back

The verses follow a pup through its life: staying all day with its mother, who feeds it and washes and dries its fur; eating clams, mussels and abalone until its belly is full; diving and rolling in the waves; and finally, grown big and strong, leaving its mother to strike out on its own.

How it was made

When schooling in Alaska moved online during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pfeiffenberger, the center's education coordinator, set out to reach students learning in classrooms or at home, with an internet connection or without. He worked with sea otter experts and an illustrator to create portable materials in several formats.

The work earned him a regional Freeman Tilden Award, which honours excellence and innovation in interpretation, education and visitor engagement by a National Park Service employee. The center has handed out nearly 400 copies of the book to teachers and educators across Alaska, and a second book in the series may follow.
