Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability and death in the United States. Based on 2021 data:
| U.S. adults who smoke cigarettes | about 28.3 million |
| People living with at least one smoking-caused disease | over 16 million |
| Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke | 58 million |
CDC leads the national effort against the deaths and chronic diseases tobacco causes, through its Office on Smoking and Health (OSH).
Mission, vision and goals
Mission: to end commercial tobacco use and exposure, giving everyone, in every community, a fair chance to live free of the disease, disability, death and social and economic harm tobacco causes.
Vision: a world free of commercial tobacco–related disease, disability and death.
Goals
- Stop young people and young adults from starting.
- Help adults and youth quit.
- End exposure to secondhand smoke.
- Advance health equity by finding and ending tobacco-related disparities.
How OSH works
With local, state, national and international partners, OSH works to:
- grow the science of what works in tobacco control;
- build lasting capacity for comprehensive tobacco control programs;
- get timely information to the public and policymakers;
- coordinate policy, partnerships and strategy;
- support global tobacco control through surveillance, capacity building and sharing information.
