When a hazardous chemical is released, it can harm people's health.

How releases happen

  • By accident — an industrial accident, for example.
  • On purpose — such as a terrorist attack with a chemical weapon.

The chemicals

Used in industrychlorine, ammonia, benzene
Made from everyday itemssome can be made from household cleaners

Protecting yourself

Nothing guarantees safety in a chemical emergency, but there are things you can do to protect yourself.

  • Have a disaster plan. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and losses.
  • Expect stress, and get support. If you go through a disaster, feeling stressed is normal — and you may need help finding ways to cope.
