Dr. June E. Osborn

Biography

For more than thirty years, Dr. June E. Osborn has published research and served as an expert advisor on a number of urgent health and medical issues—including virology, infectious diseases and vaccines, and public health policy—to the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization.

Dr. Osborn earned her M.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1961. She spent three years in training as a pediatric resident at Boston Children's and Massachusetts General Hospitals and then two years as a postdoctoral fellow in virology and infectious diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and at the University of Pittsburgh. From 1966 to 1984 she was on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School, where she was professor in the Departments of Medical Microbiology and of Pediatrics. In 1975 was appointed associate dean for biological sciences in the University of Wisconsin Graduate School.

In 1984, Dr. Osborn left Wisconsin to become dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. She was also professor of epidemiology in the School of Public Health and professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases in the University of Michigan Medical School. In 1986 she was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine and from 1995 to 2000 she was a member of its governing council. In 1994 she was also elected to fellowship in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1996 she became the sixth president of the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation in New York.

During the 1980s and 1990s Dr. Osborn held numerous senior positions including chair of the National Institutes of Health National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute advisory committee on AIDS, the National Advisory Committee for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's AIDS Health Services Project, and the U.S. National Commission on AIDS. She was also a member of the Global Commission on AIDS of the World Health Organization, and has served on the boards of the PEW/Rockefeller Health of the Public Program, and the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Dr. Osborn has been a member of the boards of the Corporation for Supportive Housing in New York, and the Legal Action Center in New York, and the Center for Health Care Strategies in Princeton, New Jersey. She also has chaired the Physician Leadership on National Drug Policy, an organization based at Brown University that brings a medical perspective to the United States substance abuse policy.
