The knee joint is made of bone, cartilage, ligaments and fluid, and muscles and tendons move it. When any of these is injured or diseased, the result is a knee problem — often pain and difficulty walking.
Knee problems are very common and affect people of every age. They can get in the way of everything from playing sports to getting up from a chair and walking, and can change daily life a great deal.
Osteoarthritis
The most common disease of the knee is osteoarthritis: the cartilage in the knee slowly wears away, causing pain and swelling.
Injuries
Injuries to ligaments and tendons also cause knee problems. A common one is to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), usually from a sudden twist. ACL tears and other knee injuries are common in sports.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. In some cases a doctor may recommend a knee replacement.
