Le Boxeur JACK JOHNSON

A black-and-white studio portrait photograph of Jack Johnson, captured in France in 1913. Johnson is depicted standing in front of a landscape studio backdrop. He stands in a boxing pose, his proper right fist raised, and his proper left fist held slightly back and up. He is shirtless and wears tight-fitting boxing shorts with a fabric belt tied at the waist and black leather boxing shoes. He looks directly at the camera. A typewritten label affixed along the bottom edge of the photograph reads [Le Boxeur JACK JOHNSON (B)].

On the verso are several stamps and inscriptions. Handwritten at the top is “19/12/13. Le nègre Jack Johnson qui va combattre Jim Johnson our le titre de champion du Monde de boxe toutes categories.” Beneath this are several stamps. One, in blue, is for La Dépêche and has the date “31 mars 1914.” A second, in red, is for “Grands Journaux” and a third, along the bottom in blue, is a copyright stamp for “M. Branger.” There is also a date stamp, in black, “19 Dec 1913.”
