Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. Its first sign is often a change in the size, shape, colour or feel of a mole. Most melanomas have a black or black-blue area. Melanoma can also appear as a new mole that is black, abnormal or "ugly looking."
What to watch for: ABCDE
- Asymmetry: one half does not match the other.
- Border: the edges are ragged, blurred or irregular.
- Colour: uneven, and may include shades of black, brown and tan.
- Diameter: the size changes, usually growing.
- Evolving: the mole has changed over the past few weeks or months.
Treatment
Surgery is the first treatment for melanoma at every stage. Other treatments are chemotherapy and radiation, biologic therapy, which strengthens the body's own ability to fight cancer, and targeted therapy, which uses substances that attack cancer cells without harming normal cells.
