Deaths related to pregnancy are rare, but too many women in the United States still die each year from pregnancy complications — and most of these deaths are preventable. Recognizing urgent maternal warning signs, getting an accurate, timely diagnosis, and receiving quality care can save lives.

Unequal risk

There are large racial disparities. American Indian, Alaska Native, Black, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander women are more likely to die of pregnancy-related causes than White women — a gap CDC calls unacceptable. CDC's Hear Her campaign has more on disparities and resilience among American Indian and Alaska Native women during and after pregnancy.

CDC supports them through its ERASE MM program (Enhancing Reviews and Surveillance to Eliminate Maternal Mortality)
Perinatal quality collaboratives (PQCs)State or multistate teams working to improve care for mothers and babies, tackling the leading causes of pregnancy-related death and putting MMRC recommendations into practice. CDC supports the National Network of Perinatal Quality Collaboratives and several PQCs
CDC LOCATe (Levels of Care Assessment Tool)Helps states and other jurisdictions assess their levels of maternal and newborn care in a standard way, find gaps, and strengthen risk-appropriate care
