President Garfield’s Condition: August 2, 1881, 7:00 PM

EXECUTIVE MANSION,

August 2, 1881.

7.00 P. M.

The President has continued to progress favorably during the day, and appears perceptibly better in his general condition than yesterday, a more natural tone of voice being especially perceptible.  The appearance of the external wounds, at the evening dressing was exceedingly good; that made by the ball is rapidly granulating; while the discharge from the deeper portion of the wound, which is abundant and healthy, comes through the counter opening made by operation.  The rise of temperature this afternoon is moderate and attended by no inconvenience to the patient.  At present his pulse is 104; temperature, 100°; respiration, 20.
