Most people who develop type 2 diabetes have prediabetes first: blood sugar higher than normal, but not yet high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. About 115 million U.S. adults, more than 2 in 5, have it. It usually has no signs, which is why 8 in 10 people with it don't know, sometimes for years.

Take CDC's 1-minute prediabetes risk test. If it shows a high risk, see your doctor for a simple blood test to confirm.
Who is at higher risk
Anyone can develop prediabetes at any age, but the risk is higher if you:
- have a family history of type 2 diabetes;
- are over 45;
- have overweight or obesity;
- had diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes);
- have high blood pressure;
- are Hispanic or Latino, Black, Asian American or Native American.
It can be reversed

If your doctor confirms prediabetes, join a lifestyle change programme recognised by CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program. You will:
- work with a trained lifestyle coach on small, manageable steps that fit your life;
- learn to eat well and add activity to your day;
- learn to manage stress, stay motivated and solve problems so the progress lasts.
