The Stagville Descendants Council preserves and shares the history of Stagville, a former plantation in Durham, North Carolina — including the stories of the Africans enslaved there, their African American descendants, and their contributions to American society.

Stagville

Foundedlate 1700s
Sizeabout 30,000 acres across several counties — one of the largest plantations in the U.S. South
Enslavedas many as 900 women, men and children

After emancipation, people formerly enslaved at Stagville built new lives on the plantation, in Durham and beyond. Their descendants have made major contributions to the advancement of African Americans, including in the Civil Rights Movement.

The council's work

Made up of people with family ties to the plantation, the council:

  • connects descendants and helps them explore their shared heritage, families and legacies
  • teaches the public about the plantation and wider African American history through programs, exhibits and tours
  • works with schools, community groups and cultural institutions
  • partners with preservationists, historians and government agencies to protect the plantation's cemeteries, buildings, records and artifacts

It joined the African American Civil Rights Network in 2024.

The Civil Rights Network

The African American Civil Rights Network, created by the African American Civil Rights Act of 2017 and coordinated by the National Park Service, recognizes the movement and the sacrifices of those who fought discrimination and segregation, through a collection of public and private properties, facilities and programs.
