The Battle of Cedar Creek, also called the Battle of Belle Grove, was fought on October 19, 1864 in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The last major battle of Philip Sheridan’s Valley Campaign of August–October 1864, it involved 47,210 troops and cost an estimated 7,682 casualties. It began as a Confederate triumph and ended as a Union rout — and it came just three weeks before the presidential election.

Eve of battle

On the night of October 18, the tents of part of Sheridan’s 32,000-strong Union Army of the Shenandoah covered the fields around Belle Grove Plantation, near the village of Middletown. Belle Grove was Union headquarters, ringed with hundreds of supply wagons, ambulances and tents.

The surprise attack

Confederate Lt. Gen. Jubal Early planned a bold stroke. Two Confederate divisions crossed the North Fork of the Shenandoah and marched past Long Meadow; after fording Cedar Creek, some 3,000 Confederates advanced under a rising fog. Following a silent all-night march along the base of the Massanutten, they crossed the creek and river and, hidden by dense fog, stormed the Union lines before dawn — catching many soldiers unaware, some still asleep in their tents.

  • The 128th New York took the brunt of the attack, able to see little in the fog and smoke but the flash of rifles.
  • To slow the Confederate rush, Col. Stephen Thomas was ordered to sacrifice his 1,000 men from Vermont, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania — a fight one veteran later called a “vortex of hell.”
  • As the Confederates neared Belle Grove, Union troops scrambled to save the wagons and ambulances.
  • Union officers tried to make a stand in the Middletown Cemetery, on a knoll west of the village — the only strong position they could find.

Union troops were driven from their camps and back through Middletown in disarray. Sheridan later recalled the scene he rode into:

“There burst upon our view the appalling spectacle of a panic-stricken army — hundreds of slightly wounded men, throngs of others… utterly demoralized, …all pressing to the rear in hopeless confusion, telling only too plainly that a disaster had occurred at the front.”

The fatal halt

At the height of the Confederate success, Maj. Gen. John Gordon met Early to decide what to do next. Gordon urged pressing the pursuit; Early believed the battle already won. The Confederate advance stopped. Gordon later wrote:

“The concentration was stopped; the blow was not delivered… We halted, we hesitated, we dallied.”

Sheridan’s ride and the counterattack

Sheridan, away at Winchester, arrived after his famous, dramatic ride to the battlefield and rallied his shattered army. His re-formed lines stretched almost two miles from east to west, and their counterattack swept back over the fields they had fled that morning, turning the Confederate victory into a total defeat.

Why it mattered

The Union victory ended Confederate resistance in the Shenandoah Valley. Coming weeks before the election, the news lifted morale across the North and helped carry Abraham Lincoln to a landslide reelection.
