The largest mausoleum in North America is a public thank-you

The final resting place of President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia,
is the largest mausoleum in North America.

The size is not vanity — Grant did not build it. It testifies to a people's
gratitude for the man who, as Commanding General of the Union Army, ended
the bloodiest conflict in American history, and who then, as **President of
the United States**, worked to heal the country after the civil war and to
make rights for all citizens a reality.

Both halves of that sentence matter. The general is remembered; the president
who spent his administration trying to enforce Reconstruction is remembered
less, and this monument was raised by people who had both in mind.

Getting there

General Grant National Memorial is in **Riverside Park, on the Upper West Side
of Manhattan**.

• The mausoleum entrance is between northbound and southbound Riverside
  Drive, near the intersection of West 122nd Street.
• The visitor centre is to the west, across southbound Riverside Drive.

Street parking exists but can be very hard to find. The area is well served
by bus and subway through the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which
is the sensible way to arrive.
