Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, in Virginia about 13 km (8 mi) west of Washington, D.C., is the first and only national park devoted to the performing arts. Beneath its stages lies a slice of the Piedmont's long geologic history.

The park

AuthorizedOctober 15, 1966, as Wolf Trap Farm Park
RenamedAugust 21, 2002
Sizeabout 52 hectares (130 acres)
Land given byCatherine Filene Shouse, researcher and philanthropist, who wanted to bring a wide range of performing arts to the people of the National Capital area

Its three venues:

  • the Filene Center, a leading open-air arts pavilion hosting internationally known performers against the rolling hills and woods along Wolf Trap Creek;
  • the Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods, an outdoor amphitheater introducing children to the performing arts;
  • the Meadow Pavilion, for smaller shows.

The bedrock

RockAgeWhere
Mather Gorge Formation — metagraywacke and schist, metamorphosed sedimentsNeoproterozoic–Cambrianunderlies most of the park; exposed along Wolf Trap Creek
Granite — light-gray, massive, with muscovite and biotiteOrdovicianintruded into the Mather Gorge rocks in the park's southeast
Vein quartzPaleozoicmany bodies cutting the metasediments; large quartz blocks mapped near the creek
Alluvium and colluviumQuaternary — youngalong the creek's broad valley, filling the hollows in the meadows

Wolf Trap belongs to the Piedmont Physiographic Province, sharing its history and characteristic formations with a region far larger than the park.

Maps and reports

The NPS Geologic Resources Inventory, which has produced geologic maps and reports for more than 270 parks, has mapped Wolf Trap, and a Soil Resources Inventory has been completed. Both are on the NPS DataStore.
