At some point, either you or your child will be ready to stop breastfeeding.
**Weaning is switching a baby's diet from breast milk to other foods and
drinks.**
When is a personal decision and different for everyone. Some children
gradually take more interest in solid food and less in breastfeeding; others
want to stop suddenly. You may be ready at a different time from your child.
The one rule that is not personal

And the part that saves money: **children over 12 months do not need infant
formula, and do not need toddler milks, drinks or formula either.** Those
products are marketed at exactly this transition, and at this age they are
not required.
Note the three words attached to the cow's milk: **plain, pasteurised,
unsweetened**. Whole, not reduced fat, at this age.
How to do it
Wean over several weeks or more. As you slowly stop breastfeeding your
body produces less milk, and eventually stops making it. Going gradually is
easier on both of you, and it gives your child time to:
- Get used to the new taste — formula, or plain whole cow's milk, or a
fortified unsweetened dairy alternative, depending on age - Adjust to drinking from a bottle or a cup
Two separate adjustments, which is why the timescale is weeks rather than
days: the taste and the container both change at once.
