
CSA 10-cent dark blue Thomas Jefferson (CSA Scott 2), tied by Richmond, Virginia, November 11, 1861, circular date stamp on eleven-star flag patriotic envelope to Oxford, Georgia. The stamp was lithographed by Hoyer & Ludwig, Richmond, Virginia. The earliest known usage of a Hoyer & Ludwig printing is November 8, 1861.
The envelope bears a Confederate flag cachet with ten stars in a circle and one in the center. The eleven-star constellation represents the number of states in the Confederacy at the time. Design in black. "Sold by J. W. Randolph, Richmond, Va."
Verse reads:
On, on to the rescue, the Vandals are coming -
Go meet them with bayonet, sabre and spear;
Drive them back to the desolate land they are leaving -
Go, trusting in God, you'll have nothing to fear.
