1c Franklin Glastonbury, CT precancel cover

Commercial cover franked with a 1-cent Benjamin Franklin stamp of 1879, (Scott United States 182 Blue, formerly catalogued by Scott as 182a) and bearing a "G period" precancel. This precancel was used by J. E. Williams Company of Glastonbury, Connecticut, to mail unsealed envelopes containing advertising fliers to potential customers. Two known stamp issues bear this precancel, the 1-cent Franklin of 1873 and the 1-cent Franklin of 1879.

Established on July 1, 1806, the Glastonbury post office (known as Glastenbury before November 23, 1875) is in Hartford County, Connecticut. The J. E. Williams Company began as Williams' Genuine Yankee Soap around 1840 and moved to Glastonbury, Connecticut, in 1847. The company assumed its current name in 1848. Williams sold its shaving soaps throughout the United States and Canada, and these soaps ultimately became brand names such as Aqua Velva, Lectric Shave, and Skol.
