25c statue of Kamehameha I work order

Work order to the Engraving Department of the American Bank Note Company dated July 18, 1883 [author unknown], for three Hawaiian postage stamps -- the 25-cent dark violet King Kamehameha I (Hawaii Scott 47); the 50-cent red King William Lunalilo (Hawaii Scott 48); and the 1-dollar Queen Emma Kaleleonalani rose red (Hawaii Scott 49).

The order called for all three printing plates to consist of 50 subjects each. The subject of the 25-cent stamp was to be the "Statue of Kamehameha I. profile view" of a "blackish purple, same [color] as 12c U.S. Stamps." and the "Size of issue of 1864-1866."

The 50-cent stamp was to be a "portrait of Lunalilo" .... "to be same size of Kamehameha IV & V of 1864 & 1866" and of a "design like Arg[entine] Rep[ublic] 25 centavos" and "color like the Arg. Rep. 8 centavos."

The 1-dollar stamp was to be a "portrait of Queen Emma. size of the head on 2c stamp issue of 1864. Hawaiian" of a "bright red (aniline & carmine) [color] like sample."

The document was signed by I.[J.] Macdonough.
