When a public health incident is urgent, CDC's Health Alert Network (HAN) is its primary channel for getting cleared information out fast — to public information officers; federal, state, territorial, tribal and local public health staff; clinicians; and public health laboratories. The system sends messages, directly and indirectly, to more than one million recipients.

A national network built on local ones

CDC works with federal, state, territorial, tribal and city and county partners to build the protocols and relationships behind a single, interoperable platform for rapid distribution. HAN supplies both the health information and the infrastructure for passing it on at state and local levels, and most state HAN programs cover more than 90% of their populations. A typical message goes to state and local health officers, epidemiologists and laboratory directors, public information officers, HAN coordinators and clinician organizations.

Three levels of message

MessageWhat it means
Health AlertThe highest level of importance about a public health incident
Health AdvisoryImportant information about an incident
Health UpdateNew information about an incident already reported

(HAN also distributes Info Service messages.)

Getting the alerts

Anyone can receive an email when a new HAN message goes out: on CDC's Quick Subscribe page, enter an email address and register.
