National Safety Month and International Safe Communities Initiative

The National Safety Council’s National Safety Month is an annual observance in June to increase education about the top causes of preventable injuries and deaths and encourage safe behaviors. This is an opportunity for businesses to focus on the safety and health of their employees and communities to promote safety to their residents. The webinar will highlight National Safety Month’s special activities.

As part of their continuing commitment to community safety, NSC is managing the international Safe Communities initiative in the US. This program encourages communities to take an active and strategic role in community safety promotion. Using a coalition model, a successful Safe Community includes all sectors of the community to serve all residents of the community in reducing injuries and preventing deaths. Emergency preparedness is a key component in all Safe Communities.

During this webinar you will learn more about National Safety Month’s special activities and also hear specific examples of Safe Communities emergency preparedness in action. Our two speakers from the NSC will be: Donna Stein-Harris and Tess Benham.

Presenter's biography

Donna Stein-Harris is the Senior Director, Strategic Initiatives, for the National Safety Council. She is responsible for off-the-job safety and health programs, the international Safe Communities America initiative in the United States, as well as the development of strategic programming addressing the Council’s platform issues such as poisoning from unintentional drug overdoses and the prevention of falls. Tess Benham, Program Manager at the NSC, is responsible for development, implementation, and evaluation of injury prevention programs and programs that promote the safety and health in home and community settings. Tess is the NSC representative for the National Citizen Corps Affiliate Programs.

The Community Preparedness Webinar Series features new community preparedness topics several times each month and is free to the public. Each webinar will accommodate the first 500 visitors that enter the website at the time of the webinar.
