What contributing factors are
Contributing factors are the practices and conditions that lead to foodborne illness outbreaks. CDC publishes technical definitions for 30 of them, grouped in three types. For all 30 in one file, see the printable list.
The three types
Contamination — definitions of the factors by which contamination leads to outbreaks.
Proliferation — definitions of the factors involving proliferation, the growth of germs in food.
Survival — definitions of the factors involving survival of germs in food.
Why the definitions changed
CDC, the Food and Drug Administration and health departments revised the definitions to show how foodborne illness outbreaks evolve. Participants in CDC's National Environmental Assessment Reporting System began using them on January 1, 2022, for outbreaks occurring in 2022 or later.
