Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has received $21 million from the Great American Outdoors Act's National Parks and Public Lands Legacy Restoration Fund to repair 14 miles of U.S. Route 209 over two years — one of the park's largest and most expensive infrastructure needs.

U.S. Route 209, due for repair from 2022. NPS / M. Cuff.
The work
The work includes milling off the old pavement, full-depth patch and base repairs, new culverts, rebuilt shoulders and fresh line striping on the park's most heavily used road.
Why
Repairing the surface, the layers beneath it and the drainage will extend the road's life, end the constant patching of potholes and other stopgaps, and make it safer for drivers and cyclists — including fixing steep drop-offs at the shoulder. It will modernize a vital piece of park infrastructure for the millions who visit each year and for the residents, commuters and park staff who use it daily.
