GOES East Watches Large Low Pressure Storm System

GOES East watched a large low pressure system swirl over the Eastern United States and Canada on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, which brought scattered thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong wind gusts through parts of the Midwest as it moved along a cold front that extended all the way to the Mexican border.

Spurred by cold Arctic air moving south from Canada and warm, moist air moving in a northeasterly direction from the south and southeast, the system is strengthening, bringing widespread rain to the northeast today (Monday). By the end of the week, another system, combined with plummeting temperatures, may bring additional snows to Montana, Idaho, northern Nebraska, and western Minnesota.

This true-color image was captured by the VIIRS sensor onboard NOAA-20, which provides daily, high-resolution visible and infrared images of Earth's atmosphere from across the globe.
