The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) produces and distributes information on a wide variety of earth-science specialties such as geology, hydrology, cartography, geography, and remote sensing, as well as information on land use and energy, mineral, and water resources. This information is in many forms, including books, maps, photographs, and various data formats.

This Circular describes sources of USGS information and lists in tabular form USGS products and their sources. The descriptions of information sources are arranged by subject (product type, office function, or field of earth science) with USGS sources preceding other sources (other Federal, State, or private organizations). The descriptions include addresses and telephone numbers. (FTS telephone numbers are included for Federal employees whose phones are tied into the FTS system.) Table 1, "USGS products and their sources," categorizes USGS products into the following groups: catalogs and lists, indexes, book publications, periodicals (any product issued periodically, including annuals), map publications, other USGS products, and inactive report series. Products are listed either by title (indicated by quotation marks), by series name (indicated by capitalization), or by an informal name. Individual reports published in a series are not listed separately, as done in catalogs of publications. The sources listed in the table are only those from which each product is commonly available.

Organizational codes (shown in bold type) facilitate cross-referencing within the Circular. The codes are not necessarily accepted acronyms or abbreviations of the organizations' names.

Information can be accessed from this Circular three ways: by subject (using the Contents), by product (using table 1), and by organization (using the List of Organizational Codes). (1) If you have a general subject in mind (for example, ordering a geologic map), turn to the Contents and select the organizations that could potentially help you. Consult the descriptions of these organizations to determine which to contact. (2) If you know the product you need but not its source, turn to table 1 and find the product listed in the left column. Sources for each USGS product are listed by organizational code. Consult the descriptions of these sources to determine which source to contact. (3) If you know the product you need and its source, turn to the alphabetical List of Organizational Codes to find the page number giving the source's address and phone number.

General questions are best directed to the following organizations: Geologic Inquiries Group (GIG), for geology; Hydrologic Information Unit (HIU), for water resources; National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC), for mapping, geography, and remote sensing; Public Inquiries Offices (PIO's), for

publications and general information.

Although "obtaining" can mean either purchasing or borrowing, the following information pertains primarily to purchasing from USGS sources. Because product availability, price, and ordering procedures vary between non-USGS sources, it is recommended you call for specific ordering information. For assistance in borrowing, ask your local librarian about interlibrary loans.

To obtain a specific product, you must have complete identification of the product and payment (when applicable). Identification of series publications can be obtained several ways. Citations of recently published materials appear in the monthly list, "New Publications of the U.S. Geological Survey," and include complete identification and price information. Free subscriptions to this list are available from U.S. Geological Survey, 582 National Center, Reston, VA 22092. Other sources of complete identification of series publications include citations in USGS publication catalogs, bibliographies, and map indexes, library card catalogs, and the American Geological Institute's "Index of Geology."

Certain USGS information groups assist in identifying products and providing price information: Geologic Inquiries Group (GIG) for geologic products, Hydrologic Information Unit (HIU) for water-resources products, National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC) for mapping and remote sensing products, and Public Inquiries Offices (PIO's) for all products. Please note that Text Products Section and the Distribution Centers cannot provide identification assistance but will provide price information for the identified products they sell.

Payment (when applicable) for products obtained from USGS sources must be made in United States funds. Prices are subject to change, but you will be notified if a change affects your order. Discounts are available on quantity orders of both books and maps. On orders of 100 copies or more of the same book sent to the same address, a 25 percent discount is given. On an order of maps and charts amounting to $500 or more at the list price, a 50 percent discount is given.

For mail orders, the required prepayment should be made by check or (international) money order payable in United States funds to the U.S. Geological Survey. The prices of all USGS products include domestic surface mail, except map orders of less than $10 for which there is a mailing charge of $1. Twenty-five percent of the order's cost should be added to cover surface transportation to countries other than the United States, Canada, and Mexico; for air mail add 100 percent to the order's cost. Information network and over-the-counter sales Public Inquiries Off ices (PIO)

Public Inquiries Offices are a network of earth-science information offices that are especially convenient for walkin customers but also answer inquiries made by mail or telephone. Nine PIO's are in downtown areas of major cities; the USGS National Center and the USGS Western Regional Center each have an off ice as well.

In addition to assisting the public in the selection and ordering of all USGS products, the PIO's provide counter

service for USGS topographic,

geologic, and water-resources maps and reports. The offices furnish information about the USGS and its programs and are a link to information held by State and other federal offices. PIO's distribute catalogs, Circulars, indexes, and leaflets and provide bibliographic and geographic reference searches. Most PIO's (those not located near regional USGS centers) maintain libraries of recent USGS book reports and are regional depositories for Open-File Reports.

Book Products Text Products Section (TPS)

The Text Products Section distributes the following kinds of products over-the-counter and by mail: (1) books in formal series, such as Professional Papers, Bulletins, Water-Supply Papers, Techniques of Water-Resources Investigations, Circulars, special books, and catalogs; (2) popular publications of general interest, such as leaflets, pamphlets, and booklets; (3) single copies of the "Earthquake Information Bulletin" and "Preliminary Determination of Epicenters"; and (4) miscellaneous reports, including some that are no longer available from the Superintendent of Documents (see GPO-S entry).

Map Products Western Distribution Branch (DIST-W)

The Western Distribution Branch sells over-the-counter and by mail geologic, hydrologic, topographic, and land use and land cover maps of areas west of the Mississippi River, including Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana, Guam, and American Samoa. DIST-W also distributes map indexes, "List of Geological Survey Geologic and Water-Supply Reports and Maps for [State]," and "Water-Resources Investigations of the U.S. Geological Survey in [State]" for the States in its region, as well as copies of the annual supplements to the USGS publication catalogs and most general interest

publications. In addition, DIST-W

accepts orders over-the-counter for those reports held by the Open-File Services Section (see OFSS entry).

The Alaska Distribution Section sells over-the-counter and by mail geologic, hydrologic, and topographic maps of Alaska to Alaska residents. DIST-A also distributes topographic and geologic map indexes of Alaska, "List of Geological Survey Geologic and Water-Supply Reports and Maps for Alaska," "Water-Resources Investigations of the U.S. Geological Survey in Alaska," as well as most general interest publications.

Although the distribution offices described above provide counter service for their products, they are primarily mail order outlets. For maps, PIO's are the main over-the-counter sales outlets of the USGS. In addition, the National Cartographic Information Center in Rolla, Mo., sells over-the-counter topographic maps of the mid-continent region (see NCIC entry).

Open-File Reports and Water-Resources Investigations Reports Open-File Services Section (OFSS)

The Open-File Services Section is a mail-order facility for microfiche and paper copies of most USGS Open-File Reports. In 1982, OFSS became the primary distribution center for new Water-Resources Investigations reports. DIST-W accepts over-the-counter orders for those Open-File Reports and Water-Resources Investigations reports held by OFSS. Complete citations and ordering information for new Open-File Reports and Water-Resources Investigations reports are included in the monthly list, "New Publications of the U.S. Geological Survey;" this information is also available from OFSS and earth-science reference libraries.

Before 1982, Water-Resources Investigations reports were made available in several ways: (1) released as Open-File Reports (whose Open-File Report numbers do not correspond to the Water-Resources Investigations report numbers), (2) released through the National Technical Information Service (see NTIS entry), or (3) available only for examinaton at specific Water Resources Division District Offices (see WRD-DO entry) or the Hydrologic Information Unit (see HID entry).

Some Open-File Reports and Water-Resources Investigations reports are available only from certain WRD-DO's; other Open-File Reports are available only from certain National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC) offices and other USGS offices. The National Geophysical Data Center (see NGDC entry) is also a source of USGS Open-File Reports.

USGS libraries have reference copies of most Open-File Reports and Water-Resources Investigations reports. Some of the reports can be inspected at specified PIO's, WRD-DO's, other Federal agencies, universities, and State and local agencies. Other Map-Related Products National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC)

The USGS National Cartographic Information Center offices distribute a variety of custom cartographic products, such as USGS digital data, geodetic control lists, color and feature map separates, orthophotoquads, land use and land cover maps, map reproducibles (including out-of-print materials), and geographic names lists.

Aerial Photographs and Satellite Images EROS Data Center (EDC)

The Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS) Data Center sells high- and low-altitude photographs as well as photographs taken from NASA's manned spacecraft. In addition, the Center sells Landsat digital and photographic data of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS).

Orders for EDC products, along with prepayment, are accepted by USGS National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC) off ices. Information concerning price and availability for EDC products is also obtainable from PIO's and any NCIC office.

The Visual Information Services Group provides earth-science movies on a free-loan, short-term (2- to 3-day) basis to educational institutions, professional and scientific societies, civic and industrial groups, and other established organizations.

Teachers Packets Geologic Inquiries Group (GIG) and National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC)

Packets of teaching aids, which differ according to subject, grade level, and geographic location, are available from the Geologic Inquiries Group and the National Cartographic Information Center. These packets include lists of reference materials, various maps and map indexes, and a selection of general interest publications. Requests for teachers packets should be sent on school letterhead to GIG or NCIC, as appropriate, and should indicate the grade level and subject of interest.

GIG compiles two packets: (1) "Selected Packet of Geologic Teaching Aids," for elementary: and secondary-school teachers of general science courses, and (2) "Teachers Packet of Geologic Materials," for secondary-school and college teachers of earth-science courses.

NCIC compiles specialized packets emphasizing mapping. Requests for packets should include specific details about the needs and (or) interests of a particular class.

Main and branch libraries (LIB)

The USGS Library System is one of the largest earth-science library systems in the world. It consists of the main library in Reston, Va., with branches in Denver, Colo., Flagstaff, Ariz., and Menlo Park, Calif. A separate Field Records collection (see LIB-F entry) and Photographic Library (see LIB-P entry) are maintained as part of the Denver branch.

Materials covering all aspects of the geosciences are collected by the library system on a worldwide basis.

Holdings include 1.1 million monographs and serials; 385,000 maps; 355,000 pamphlets; and 340,000 reports and dissertations in microform. A publication exchange program with State geoscience agencies and most foreign countries has enriched the system with extensive and comprehensive holdings of official publications and maps.

Although the primary purpose of the library system is to support the USGS, it also serves other Federal agencies, State agencies, universities, and research organizations. The libraries are open to the public. Most of the materials in the library system may be borrowed by the public through interlibrary loans initiated by local libraries.

Photographic Library (LIB-P)

The Photographic Library contains a collection of over 250,000 photographs (predominantly black-and-white) taken during USGS studies. A few photographs taken before the founding of the USGS (1879) are included in the collection. The Photographic Library may be used by the public. Persons who wish to obtain prints or enlargements, copy negatives, or duplicate transparencies are encouraged to visit the library to make their selections. The library staff will prepare lists of selected photographs in response to specific requests. Photographs are indexed by subject and by geographic location.

Field Records Collection (LIB-F)

The Field Records collection is the depository for the original materials produced by the USGS geologists during their field investigations. The collection, some of which predates the USGS, consists primarily of materials on the United States; holdings include 15,600 notebooks, 2,000 folders, 2,400 map groups, and 60,000 aerial photographs. The holdings are cataloged by (1) the names of the scientists involved, (2) the geographic locations, and (3) the resultant publications. Upon gaining the approval of the Central Regional Geologist, persons may consult specific records at the Denver Library or make arrangements for the materials to be sent to a more convenient USGS library for examination. Please contact the Field Records staff first to ascertain the existence of the specific records needed.

Core Library (CORE)

The USGS Core Library collects, stores, and makes available to the public valuable core material from boreholes drilled for oil and gas. The cores are collected from a variety of public and private sources; core donations to the library are encouraged. Most of the Library holdings are from the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains regions, with cores from the States of Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming best represented.

The cores are processed into core slabs, a more usable and easily archived form. The processed cores may be examined at the facility. Persons interested in viewing specific cores should contact the Core Library and make arrangements for viewing.

General National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC)

The National Cartographic Information Center is the primary information organization of the National Mapping Division of the USGS. NCIC has developed into a network that consists of seven USGS NCIC offices (a headquarters office, four regional offices, and two special centers Alaska, and National Space Technology Laboratories), a Federal affiliate NCIC office (maintained by the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, Tenn.), and many State affiliate NCIC offices (established with State geoscience agencies).

In addition to answering general and technical questions on cartography, geography, geodesy, and remote sensing, NCIC operates a national information service for U.S. cartographic and geographic data, including the data of other Government agencies. NCIC gathers, organizes, and distributes descriptions of maps, charts, aerial photographs, digital map data, geodetic control data, geographic data, and satellite products. The three different kinds of NCIC offices provide slightly different products and services as described in the following paragraphs:

USGS NCIC offices accept orders for aerial photographs and satellite imagery and sell custom cartographic products, such as USGS digital data, geodetic control lists, color and feature map separates, orthophotoquads, land use and land cover maps, and geographic names lists. Geographic Names Branch of Geographic Names (RGCN)

The Branch of Geographic Names maintains a national research, coordinating, and information center to which all problems and inquiries concerning domestic geographic names can be directed.

In addition to answering inquiries concerning geographic names, the Branch compiles name information, manages a names data repository, maintains information files, and publishes materials on domestic geographic names. It supports the publication programs of the USGS and other Government agencies by providing assistance and information on official standard names; this office also coordinates name usage between the Federal and State Governments.

The Branch furnishes staff assistance to the interdepartmental U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which renders formal decisions on proposed new names, proposed name changes, and names that are in conflict. The USGS, in cooperation with the Board on Geographic Names, maintains the National Geographic Names Data Base and is now compiling The National Gazeteer of the United States of America on a State-by-State basis. The National Geographic Names Data Base is contained within the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Questions concerning this system should be directed to the GNIS Manager at the RGCN address.

The Office of Geographic and Cartographic Research responds to inquiries concerning USGS research in geography and cartography. This office conducts research and investigations that lead to new and (or) improved geographic and cartographic concepts, methods, and techniques in digital cartography, computer-based geographic informaton systems, land use/land cover classifications, geodetic surveying systems, remote sensing, printing and processing of maps and image products, and geographic analyses applied to multidisciplinary resource studies.

The EROS Data Center receives, processes, and distributes earth-image data acquired by satellite and aircraft and investigates new uses for such data. EDC develops computerized land information systems and studies new ways of handling data and information. EDC acquires data from satellites and aircraft, stores and manipulates data by using computers, and retrieves data by telecommunications.

EDC sells high- and low-altitude

photographs as well as photographs

General Geologic Inquiries Group (GIG)

The Geologic Inquiries Group is the primary information group of the Geologic Division of the USGS. GIG provides information and answers inquiries on the activities and products of the Geologic Division. Questions concerning all aspects of geology, such as the geology of specific areas, energy and mineral resoures, earthquakes, volcanoes, geochemistry, geophysics, other geoscience disciplines, and geologic map coverage, should be directed to GIG.

GIG produces Geologic Map Indexes (by State). Other materials available from GIG include selected reference lists on a wide variety of geoscience topics (such as the geology of each State), two packets of teaching materials (see Teachers Packets entry), and specific informaton as needed to answer individual inquiries.

Geologic Names Geologic Names Committee (GNC)

The Geologic Names Committee defines and recommends policy and rules governing stratigraphic nomenclature and classification for the USGS. In addition to providing information on the Survey's policy and usage of geologic names, staff of the Geologic Names Committee (1) prepares publications such as "Stratigraphic Notes (Contributions to Stratigraphy)," a series of USGS Bulletins that report changes in official USGS geologic names usage, (2) compiles lexicons that show domestic geologic names usage, and (3) maintains a file of geologic names that have been reserved for future use.

Essential information on each named rock unit is contained in the GEONAMES summary lexicon, a computerized data base. Printouts of selected GEONAMES data are available from the staff. The tape is also available for loan to universities, State agencies, and other scientific organizations.

Recent Earthquake Data National Earthquake Information Service (NEIS)

The National Earthquake Information Service computes and publishes epicenter locations for earthquakes worldwide ("Preliminary Determination of Epicenters"; see IPS and GPO-S entries) and provides general information pertaining to the geographic location, magnitude, and intensity of recent earthquakes. The Hydrologic Information Unit answers general questions on hydrology, water as a resource, and hydrologic mapping, as well as on the products, projects, and services of the Water Resources Division. The Office of Water Data Coordination distributes a variety of free publications including: (1) "National Handbook of Recommended Methods for Water-Data Acquisition," (2) "Index to Water Data Activities in Coal Provinces in the United States (5 vol.)," (3) "Notes on Sedimentation Activities Calendar Year [year]," (4) "Plans for Water Data Acquisition by Federal Agencies through Fiscal Year [year]," and (5) "Guidelines for Determining Flood Flow Frequency." National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX)

NAWDEX is a confederation of organizations working to improve access to water data. Its primary objective is to assist in the identification, location, and acquisition of water data. Toward this goal, the NAWOEX Program Office and its 75 Assistance Centers, which include the Water Resources Division District Offices (see WRD-DO entry), provide a variety of services:

(1) Identification of Water-Data Collection Sites the NAWDEX Master Water Data Index identifies 460,000 water-data sites (collection organizations, site locations, data types, measurement frequencies, and

storage media).

(2) Identification of Water-Data Sources the NAWDEX Water Data Source Directory identifies the more than 800 organizations that collect water data, the specific locations within the organizations that provide data, the organizations' geographic coverage and data types, and alternate sources of data.

(3) Water-Data Search Assistance the NAWDEX Program Office and its 75 Assistance Centers help water-data users locate and obtain data. For instance, they will make bibliographic searches in the Water Resources Scientific Information Center's selected water resources abstracts. Charges for services depend on the type of service requested and the organization fulfilling the request.

National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System (WATSTO RE)

All types of water data are accessed through WATSTORE. The data in WATSTORE are grouped and stored in five files, depending on common characteristics and data collection frequencies: (1) Station Header File an index for the 320,000 water-data storage sites; (2) Daily Values File more than 240,000,000 daily parameters such as streamf low, ground-water levels, specific conductance, and water temperatures; (3) Peak Flow File 460,000 records on annual maximum streamflow and gage height values; (4) Water Quality File 2,300,000 analytical results that describe biological, chemical, and physical water characteristics; and (5) Ground-Water Site-Inventory File (independent but cross-referenced to Daily Values and Water Quality Files) data on 850,000 sites (construction history, geohydrologic data, and one-time field measurements).

Certain libraries maintain collections of selected USGS maps and make them available for reference. These libraries choose which maps they receive. The map reference libraries in each State are listed on the back of the State topographic map indexes; their addresses are also available from NCIC and from PIO's.

Over-the-counter sales of topographic maps of specific regions-Commercial Map Dealers (CMD)

Commercial map dealers throughout the United States sell USGS topographic maps of their region. A list of dealers and their addresses is included in the catalog of published State maps that accompanies each State topographic map index; the list is also available from DIST, NCIC, and PIO's. State geoscience agencies (SGA)

Many State geoscience agencies sell USGS products (book reports, maps, etc.) that pertain to their region or State. Some State geoscience agencies are also affiliated with the National Cartographic Information' Center (see NCIC entry). The USGS cooperates with State geoscience agencies in a variety of projects; publications resulting from these projects are commonly available from both organizations.

In addition to selling USGS products, many State geoscience agencies maintain reference collections that include USGS materials. State geoscience agencies allow the public to consult, but not borrow, these materials. Certain State geoscience agencies are also designated as depositories of specific USGS Open-File Reports.
