Max Miller's letter of support for Benjamin Lipsner

Max Miller sent this letter to Benjamin Lipsner on December 27, 1918, a few weeks after Lipsner had resigned his position as superintendent of the Post Office Department’s airmail service. Lipsner had originally hired Miller as the Department’s first airmail pilot in August 1918.

In this letter, Miller expressed his support for the man who originally hired him. He said, “I hereby make application as pilot in the company being formed under your supervision. I hope you will make as much of a success as the Aerial Mail was under your leadership. Knowing my Qualifications I hope you will give this note early consideration.” Lipsner was unable to form a new company, and Miller remained on staff as a postal pilot. While flying on duty for the Department, Miller suffered a fatal crash on September 1, 1920, outside Cleveland, Ohio.
