Medicare is the U.S. government's health insurance program for people 65 and older.
Who qualifies
| Age 65 or older | eligible |
| Under 65 | some people qualify, including those with disabilities, permanent kidney failure or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis |
The four parts
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| Part A | hospital insurance |
| Part B | helps pay for medical services Part A doesn't cover |
| Part C — Medicare Advantage | if you have Parts A and B, you can choose to get all your care through a provider organization, such as an HMO |
| Part D | prescription drug coverage, helping pay for some medicines |
What it doesn't do
Medicare helps with health care costs, but it doesn't cover every medical expense, and it doesn't pay for most long-term care.
