NASA's X-59 Flies Supersonic for First Time

NASA's X-59 quiet supersonic research aircraft flew faster than the speed of sound for the first time on Friday, June 5, 2026. NASA test pilot Jim "Clue" Less reached a top speed of Mach 1.1 (713 mph) and an altitude of 43,400 feet. The flight opened the X-59's second block of envelope expansion test flights and focused on flying qualities at subsonic and supersonic speeds.
