Northeastern States District participates in Computers for Learning program

In November 2021, the BLM Northeastern States District Office (NSDO) participated in the Computers for Learning (CFL) program. As part of the program, NSDO transferred over 700 pounds of excess federal government computer equipment to area schools.

Executive Order 12999, “Educational Technology: Ensuring Opportunity for all Children in the Next Century,” created the CFL in order to provide schools with modern electronics and reduce waste by giving used federal equipment another purpose. The EO encourages federal agencies to transfer computers and related peripheral equipment directly to schools and educational nonprofit organizations.

“Creating a more sustainable work environment is very important to us,” said Stephanie Carman, NSDO District Manager. “Working with CFL has enabled us to make a difference for schools, the government, and the environment.”

NSDO’s excess, gently-used computer equipment was distributed to the Maranatha Christian Academy in Shawnee, Kansas and Lathrop Middle School in Lathrop, Missouri. The equipment included 12 desktop computers with hard drives, five desktop computers without hard drives, and 35 laptops with docking stations and power cords.

“Our goal was to ensure that our equipment did not end up in a landfill,” said Carman. “We are excited to continue this effort to build a more sustainable future with CFL and encourage other offices to participate as well. We hope that this equipment will benefit the schools and their students for years to come.”
