The Winter 2020 issue was the 40th of The Midden, the resource management newsletter of Great Basin National Park, published twice a year since 2001. Like the packrat middens it is named after, it has become a treasure trove for anyone who wants to learn about the past. Read in order, the issues show the park's Resource Management division growing and changing over 20 years and taking on more complicated and varied projects.
What made it possible
- Partnerships with local agencies, researchers from all over the world, and talented seasonal and permanent staff.
- Staff who stayed. In many parks people move every few years; here, more than seven resource management staff have been in the park over 10 years, three of them over 20. That institutional knowledge — and a team willing to pitch in on each other's projects — has served the park well.
- Funding, especially from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA). Great ideas need money to happen.
