These charts, from CDC's analysis for the MMWR report "Patterns and Trends in Age-Specific Black-White Differences in Breast Cancer Incidence and Mortality—United States, 1999–2014" (October 14, 2016), show trends in invasive female breast cancer incidence by race and age.

Average annual percentage change (AAPC) in incidence, 1999 to 2013:

AgeWhite womenBlack women
Under 5000.2
50–59−1.7−0.1
60–69−0.71.3
70–79−0.51.1
80 and older−1.3−0.2

Trends among Black women differed significantly (P<.05) from those among White women in every age group except under 50.

Line chart of breast cancer incidence among women under 50: nearly flat for both Black and White women

Under 50.

Line chart for women 50 to 59: incidence falling among White women and roughly flat among Black women

50–59.

Line chart for women 60 to 69: incidence falling among White women and rising among Black women

60–69.

Line chart for women 70 to 79: incidence falling among White women and rising among Black women

70–79.

Line chart for women 80 and older: incidence falling among both, faster among White women

80 and older. Charts: CDC.

Methods

  • Data: population-based registries in CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries and the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, limited to registries meeting data quality criteria for every year from 1999 to 2013 — about 92% of the U.S. population.
  • Trends: AAPCs from joinpoint regression, allowing different slopes over three periods, with change points that could differ by age and race.
