Anyone who has managed diabetes for a while knows what food, activity, stress and illness do to blood sugar. Some triggers are less obvious. A cup of coffee with nothing in it can do it. So can one short night's sleep, a sunburn, or a nasal spray.
The ten triggers, by how they work

| Artificial sweeteners | Some studies show they can raise blood sugar |
| Losing sleep | Even one night of too little sleep can make the body use insulin less efficiently |
| Skipping breakfast | Going without it can raise blood sugar after both lunch and dinner |
| Time of day | Blood sugar can be harder to control the later it gets |
| Dawn phenomenon | Hormones tend to surge early in the morning, and in people with diabetes blood sugar can spike with them |
| Dehydration | With less water in the body, the sugar in the blood is more concentrated |
| Nasal sprays | Some contain chemicals that trigger the liver to make more blood sugar |
| Gum disease | It raises blood sugar, and it is also one of the complications of diabetes |
Finding your own triggers
Responses vary from person to person, so the list is a set of suspects, not a rule. The practical test is simple: when a food or an activity is new, check your blood sugar before and after to see how you respond.
