Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can be dangerous for older adults and adults with certain medical conditions. Each year an estimated 110,000–180,000 U.S. adults 50 and older are hospitalized with RSV. The risk of severe illness rises with age and with certain risk factors.
Who is at highest risk
- adults 75 and older
- adults with chronic heart or lung disease
- adults with weakened immune systems
- adults with certain other underlying conditions
- adults who are frail or live in nursing homes
What RSV can do
In adults, RSV usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but some people develop pneumonia, some need to be hospitalized, and severe RSV can be fatal. It can also worsen other serious conditions:
- asthma;
- COPD — a chronic lung disease that makes breathing hard;
- heart failure — when the heart can't pump enough blood and oxygen through the body.
Call your health care provider if you have trouble breathing, trouble eating or drinking, chest pain or pressure, sudden dizziness or confusion, or symptoms that get worse.
Vaccination

If you've already had an RSV vaccine, you don't need another at this time. CDC's respiratory virus guidance also describes everyday steps to protect yourself and others from RSV and other respiratory viruses.
