The partnership
An agreement between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the USGS lets the USGS store and redistribute images from the MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) on the European Union's Sentinel-2 mission — free to the public, from USGS systems as well as ESA's Sentinels Scientific Data Hub.
- Satellites: Sentinel-2A (launched 2015) and Sentinel-2B (2017), part of a larger ESA Earth-observation fleet.
- Purpose: multispectral images of land, large islands and inland and coastal waters.
- Why it matters: its 13 spectral bands complement Landsat 8's Operational Land Imager and Landsat 7's Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus.

Getting it
Free through USGS EarthExplorer, GloVis and the Sentinel-2Look Viewer. Two products:
- Full-band data: a ZIP of JPEG2000 files in ESA's SAFE format, usable in image software or ESA's open-source tools — very similar, though not identical, to ESA's own Level-1C product.
- Full Resolution Browse: a 20-meter, three-band GeoTIFF made by the USGS.
