Signing a hospital up to national infection reporting takes about three hours

The National Healthcare Safety Network is how US healthcare facilities
report infections and safety data, and how the national figures on
healthcare-associated infections are assembled. A facility has to enrol before
it can report anything, and for an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF)
that enrolment is a defined five-step process.

Step 1: preparation

Before any registration happens:

• Print and follow the detailed enrolment checklist
• Read the NHSN Facility Administrator Enrollment Guide
• Complete the **57.151 Patient Safety Component Annual Facility Survey for
  IRF**, with its table of instructions
• Complete the required training: NHSN Facility Enrollment Training and
  Overview of the Patient Safety Component

Time to complete step 1: 2 hours, 45 minutes.

Publishing that estimate is a small act of respect for the person doing it.
Enrolment is administrative work someone has to fit into a working day, and a
process that says how long its first stage takes is one that has thought about
being completed rather than merely being correct.

Step 2: registration

Read and agree to the NHSN Rules of Behavior, after which you are
redirected to register the facility electronically.

The instruction that sounds trivial

"Be sure to check trusted websites and spam blockers."

It appears in the preparation step because the entire enrolment runs on email
confirmations to a facility administrator, inside a hospital network with
aggressive filtering. A registration that silently stalls in a spam folder is
the commonest way this process fails — which is why it is listed alongside the
training documents rather than in a troubleshooting note at the end.
