Six of fourteen workers had elevated mercury, and four did not speak English

Fluorescent lamps contain mercury. Recycling them releases it. **Workers in
electronics waste and lamp recycling facilities face health risks from
inhaling mercury vapour and mercury-containing dust.**

What those numbers say together

Eight months. Not a career's accumulation — under a year in the job was
enough to show up in urine.

Five of six symptomatic. The exposure was not a theoretical risk detected
only by testing; most of the affected workers were already feeling it.

Four of six did not speak English. That is the finding with the clearest
implication, and it is why the recommendation below says what it does. Hazard
training delivered in English to workers who do not read it is a safety
programme that exists on paper. Mercury does not care whether the sign was
understood.

What employers are asked to do

**Evaluate mercury exposure and implement controls such as enhancing
ventilation systems and providing training tailored to the worker.**

Tailored to the worker is doing the work in that sentence. Ventilation is
the engineering control; training in a language the worker actually speaks is
what makes the rest of the programme reach them.
