In 2019, 5.3% of U.S. adults said they had an unmet mental health care need because of cost in the past 12 months — they delayed getting counseling or therapy, or needed it but didn't get it, because they couldn't afford it.

Women and younger adults were hit hardest

- Women were more likely than men to go without care because of cost in every age group.
- For both sexes, the share fell with age — for women from 10.3% at 18–44 to 2.1% at 65 and older, and for men from 5.1% to 0.8%.
About the data
The figures come from household interviews in the National Health Interview Survey of the civilian population not living in institutions, reported by Emily P. Terlizzi and Benjamin Zablotsky of the National Center for Health Statistics.
