An outbreak of Bundibugyo virus disease, a type of Ebola disease, is under
way, centred on the **Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the
Congo**.
**The CDC assessed the risk this poses to the US population over the next 3
months as low.**
The condition attached to that
The assessment does not end at "low". It comes with a stated dependency:
**Ensuring sufficient public health resources to control the outbreak in
DRC will be necessary for maintaining a low risk to the U.S. population.**
That is an unusually direct thing for a risk assessment to say, and it is the
most important sentence in the report. The low risk is not a property of
distance or of American preparedness. It is a consequence of the outbreak
being contained where it is — and containment there is funded, staffed and
maintained by somebody.
A risk assessment that reads "low" is often taken as permission to stop
paying attention. This one says the opposite: the number holds as long as the
work continues.
If cases do arrive
The report is equally clear on the second half:
- **There is public health capacity in the United States to contain and
control an outbreak** - CDC guidance for US clinicians and public health practitioners can help
prevent potential spread
So the position is: low risk now, contingent on resourcing the response
abroad, with domestic capacity in place if it changes.
