Challenge
Coastal management is a complex and multifaceted profession. New professionals entering the field face the critical task of skillfully applying their academic knowledge to real-world situations in order to best serve their communities.
Solution
Using real-world ocean data and tools, the GIS Applications in Marine Science and Policy class at Monmouth University equips future coastal managers with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and address complex coastal challenges. Students use various Digital Coast resources, including the Economics: National Ocean Watch (ENOW) Explorer and the Sea Level Rise Viewer, to grasp coastal communities' ocean dependencies and vulnerabilities. They also apply methods developed by NOAA's Office for Coastal Management to estimate the economic contribution of working waterfronts. This ensures students enter the job market ready to help keep coastal communities safe, prepared, and economically thriving.

In this story map example, students used Economics National Ocean Watch data to investigate ocean access and tourism and recreation in Sea Bright, New Jersey.
