Another step toward one of the most complex spaceflight missions in history, NASA provided updates on Artemis III and announced crew members for the test flight. Planned to launch in 2027, the mission will practice docking the Orion spacecraft with two lunar landers in low Earth orbit. On future missions, including Artemis IV in 2028, landers will bring astronauts to the lunar surface. While Artemis III will not land on the Moon, it will test the complex capabilities we need to return humanity there — this time to stay. Crew assignments are as follows: * NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik, commander * ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Luca Parmitano, pilot * NASA astronaut Andre Douglas, mission specialist * NASA astronaut Frank Rubio, mission specialist * NASA astronaut Bob Hines, backup crew member Learn more about NASA’s Artemis program: https://www.nasa.gov/artemis Video Producer: Shane Apple Music: Universal Production Music Credit: NASA
What is said in the film
I am so grateful to be here today with all of you as we discuss the Artemis program and announce the four astronauts who will undertake this next exciting mission. Making his first space flight, mission specialist Andre Douglas. Record-setting astronaut, mission specialist Colonel Frank Rubio. Now on to our pilot, this astronaut, Luca Parmitano. Now to our commander, Marine Corps Colonel, Artemis III commander, Randy Bresnik.
Artemis III backup crew member, Bob Hines. One more round of applause for your Artemis III prime crew! We are certainly humbled as a crew to be able to be your crew that executes this Artemis III mission in space, being that unifying link between the phenomenal Artemis II mission we just had two months ago. And the Artemis IV mission that will follow ours. While Artemis II was all about Moon Joy, Artemis III will be all about Earth Joy.
We will study Earth's atmosphere, the environment around Orion during the mission and the impact of space's influence within the Orion capsule. Artemis III is an incredibly exciting, complicated and highly coordinated multi-launch campaign. It's going to happen in a short period of time with three of the world's most powerful rockets. So to the Artemis III crew, we wish you Godspeed on the journey ahead. You carry the fire of exploration from generations past, the confidence of this agency and the support of this nation.
The Artemis II crew, comrade, hands you the baton. You got the controls.
