- By accident — an industrial accident, for example.
- On purpose — such as a terrorist attack with a chemical weapon.

Protecting yourself
Nothing guarantees safety in a chemical emergency, but there are things you can do to protect yourself.
- Have a disaster plan. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and losses.
- Expect stress, and get support. If you go through a disaster, feeling stressed is normal — and you may need help finding ways to cope.
