When you have diabetes, the level of glucose — sugar — in your blood is too high. Over time, that can damage your kidneys.
What the kidneys do
Your kidneys clean your blood. When they are damaged, waste and fluid build up in the blood instead of leaving the body.
A silent start
Kidney damage caused by diabetes is called diabetic nephropathy. It begins long before any symptoms appear, which is why people with diabetes should be screened for kidney disease regularly. Screening uses two tests:
- a urine test, which looks for protein in the urine;
- a blood test, which shows how well the kidneys are working.
If the damage goes on
Continuing damage can lead to kidney failure. Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure in the United States. A person whose kidneys have failed needs dialysis or a kidney transplant.
Slowing it down
Kidney damage can be slowed, or kept from getting worse. What helps:
- keeping your blood sugar under control;
- keeping your blood pressure under control;
- taking your medicines;
- not eating too much protein.
