The numbers
In 2017, 46.7% of women and 39.9% of men aged 18 and older said they had had a flu vaccination in the past 12 months. For both sexes, the share rose with age.
| Age | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| 18–44 | 37.2% | 27.8% |
| 45–64 | 46.4% | 40.8% |
| 65 and older | 67.1% | 68.7% |
Women aged 18–44 and 45–64 were significantly more likely than men of the same ages to have been vaccinated.

Adults with a flu vaccination in the past 12 months, by sex and age, with 95% confidence intervals. Figure from the CDC report.
How it was measured
The National Health Interview Survey interviews a sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population at home; these figures come from its Sample Adult component. Adults were asked whether they had had a flu vaccination during the past 12 months. Because the question covers a calendar year, the estimates differ from seasonal flu vaccination totals, which count vaccinations during the flu season.
