Giardiasis is an illness caused by the parasite Giardia intestinalis, which lives in soil, food and water and can be on surfaces contaminated with waste. You are infected by swallowing it, or through exposure to human feces during sexual contact.
Who is at higher risk
- travellers to countries where giardia is common
- people in child care settings
- people who drink untreated water
Symptoms
Diarrhea is the main symptom. Others include:
- gas
- greasy stools
- stomach cramps
- upset stomach or nausea
These can lead to weight loss and loss of body fluids. Some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms often last two to six weeks.
Diagnosis and treatment
Stool tests diagnose it; several samples are often needed. Doctors treat it with one of several drugs.
Prevention
- Practise good hygiene, including frequent hand washing.
- Don't drink water that may be contaminated.
- Peel or wash fresh fruit and vegetables before eating them.
