Is your child much shorter — or much taller — than other children the same age? That is often normal. Some children are small for their age yet developing normally, and many are short or tall simply because their parents are.
What a growth disorder is
Some children do have growth disorders: problems that keep them from reaching normal height, weight, sexual maturity or other features. Very slow or very fast growth can signal a gland problem or a disease.
The role of growth hormone
The pituitary gland makes growth hormone, which drives the growth of bone and other tissues.
