In November 2022, three bureaus of the Department of the Interior filled wildland fire and aviation jobs a different way: they met candidates in person, and used Direct Hire Authority to interview them and make offers in a fraction of the usual time. Some applicants said it renewed their interest in federal careers.

Attending was not required — the same jobs could be applied for online through USAJOBS. People came anyway: some from the local area, others from as far as Washington, Montana and even North Carolina. Many brought family, friends and children who were curious about wildland fire and aviation.
What made it fast
Direct Hire Authority (DHA) let the bureaus receive and process applications, check references, interview candidates and make job offers in a fraction of the time the process normally takes. Applicants liked it too. Some said it renewed their interest in federal careers, because it added a human element — not just applying on a computer.
What came of it
At the time of the NPS report, the Park Service had made selections for over 58 positions, both permanent and seasonal. Some hires were due to start early in the new year, others in late spring or early summer.
"We are very excited to welcome these firefighters into our programs next year," said Mike Minton, Pacific West Regional Fire Management Officer. "The women and men hired through the direct hiring authority and these events will add to capacity of fire and aviation management in the western US."

The three bureaus planned to review how the events went and what could be learned from them, in the hope of holding them again.
